We’ve answered the most commonly asked questions below. Everything you need to know should be right here on this page. If you still have a question, just contact us and we’ll be happy to help.
As often as you like! We don’t specify a minimum number of sessions and you are free to arrange sessions as and when you need them. We generally advise at least one session a week during term-time to get the maximum out of your tuition.
No. You are entitled to a free 40 minute consultation to discuss your needs with a tutor. There is no obligation to buy any further sessions.
We aim to improve academic writing and study skills. This includes, but is not limited to, essay writing and structuring skills, research skills, advice on academic practice, exam preparation, and presentation skills.
If you are a postgraduate student, we can help you to plan your time effectively, develop a reading list, improve your writing style, format and edit your dissertation, and help you prepare for the viva.
Our tuition is intended for any student in higher education (levels 4-8), including those at summer school or on foundation courses. Our services especially suit the needs of international students or those simply in need of a little extra help with their writing. If you are unsure whether our tuition is right for you, please don’t hesitate to contact us to discuss your requirements.
We have offices in Grimsby and Hull or we can meet at a mutually convenient place agreed in advance by both the tutor and the student.
This will be discussed during your initial consultation meeting. However, we aim to keep preparation to a minimum so that you can focus on your deadlines.
We understand that there may be occasions when you need to rearrange a meeting. We do ask for a minimum of 24 hours’ notice of cancellation wherever possible.
We certainly think so! With students in the UK investing tens of thousands of pounds on their education, it has never been more important to obtain good qualifications in an increasingly competitive job market. Our aim is to provide a friendly and professional service that assists students with their academic writing skills. The difference between grades can often depend significantly on the use of the English language and the structure and style of an essay. As a result, we believe that making sure your essay and exam skills are up to scratch is well worth the extra investment.
In general, no. We offer a more holistic approach that focuses on improving standards of academic writing. It is important that any essay you write can be understood by an educated, non-expert. As a result, our tutors are expertly placed to provide analysis and overviews of your written work.
Nevertheless, certain subject specific tuition is available from Larkin Tutors. If you are studying history, politics, international relations, gender studies or philosophy, contact us to find out how our tutors can help.
We believe that by providing you with the tools to improve your academic study skills, you are likely to see an increase in your grades. However, your success will ultimately depend on your own abilities and the effort you put into your studies. For this reason, we cannot make any guarantees about the grades you will receive.
Yes. We believe consistency is key. You will be matched with either Fiona or Nicole at the consultation stage. Both are PhD qualified with previous experience of teaching university students. If you have a preference of who you would like to meet, we will accommodate this wherever possible.
We currently conduct face-to-face tuition sessions in Hull and Grimsby.
We can organise an online consultation session and travel within a 70-mile radius of Hull for a minimum 4-hour booking.
If we are unable to travel to your location, please see our information section about online tuition.
In the unlikely event that you are unhappy with your tutor, please contact an alternative member of staff. Details of an alternative member of staff will be given to you at your first session. Rest assured that we will help to resolve the issue with the utmost discretion. If necessary, you will be offered the opportunity to work with a different tutor.
Of course! We will contact you after your first session to see how you got on. After that, we will contact you periodically to see how you are progressing.
Unfortunately, the price for your group session will change in this scenario. If only one person turns up, we will charge our standard hourly rate for one-to-one tuition. If two people turn up when a booking for three people has been made, both will be charged our standard hourly rate for a two person group.
Our proofreaders will edit your document using Microsoft Word. This means all changes will be ‘tracked’, with more detailed changes or suggestions made using the ‘comment’ feature along the edge of the document.
Our aim at Larkin Tutors is to help you become academically self-reliant. We send your document with tracked changes so that you are responsible for the content you submit. To ensure that your work remains your own, we will not provide a ‘clean’ copy of your proofread document (i.e. a document with all tracked changes accepted).
No. The staff at Larkin tutors are committed to upholding the principles of academic integrity and do not condone academic dishonesty or misconduct. To comply with university ethical practice guidelines, we will not write any part of your essay for you.
Our proofreading service will help you to improve your standard of written English. This can often make the difference between grades. However, we cannot make any guarantees about your final grade. This is because your final mark will depend heavily on the accuracy and originality of your argument.
We may be able to accommodate a faster turnaround. However, this is not guaranteed and is subject to availability. If you need an essay quickly (i.e. faster than our estimated turnaround times stated on the website), just get in touch and we will do our best to accommodate your deadline.
In the unlikely event that your essay is returned to you late, you will be entitled to a full refund.
